In 1961 a young man with a dream of providing a good life for his wife and two sons purchased an old masonry supply business with
his life savings of $500.00. The business known as Kakley Mason and Lawn Supply operated out of a barn on the railroad tracks
at 39 Colton Street in Springfield, MA. Joe Kakley made his deliveries in his family vehicle, a 1958 Chevy Station Wagon while
his wife worked at the store and cared for their two sons. After two years in business, Joe realized a huge growth potential
for new construction in the Western Massachusetts area. Joe's ambition and insight compelled him to change his product line
to include a full line of gypsum drywall, masonry, and building products. His decision would prove to be a success. With
a strong work ethic and a commitment to customer service, the business quickly outgrew that old barn and relocated across the street
to a 12,000 square foot building at 54 Colton Street. In 1969 the company incorporated as JR KAKLEY & SONS INC and built
a reputation of being the largest and most complete commercial and residential gypsum drywall and building products supplier in Western
Massachusetts. In 1975, once again Kakley's had outgrown its current facitlity. In a changing marketplace, Joe saw the
need to diversify and expand his business to meet the growing needs of his customer base. The decision was made to purchase
the historic Foundry of the Springfield Armory on 10 Allen Street. The facility includes a 70,000 square foot brick building
on 4 acres of land and is actually where the barrels of the famous semi-automatic M-1 or "Garand rifle" were manufactured. After
extensive renovations a new and improved Kakley's was completed. Offering one-stop shopping for consumers and professional
contractors. Kakley's has grown to become one of the largest gypsum drywall, commercial steel and building products suppliers
in all of New England. Kakley's also offers a True Value Home center and a complete lumber yard which includes an onsite door
